We are so fortunate here in New Zealand that COVID-19 has not had the impact on us that it is having on the rest of the world.
We are lucky that our pregnant women are not exposed to COVID-19 in the community. A recent research article showed that women who contracted COVID-19 were five times more likely to be admitted to hospital with severe respiratory distress than non-pregnant women.
The general advice from this research was that women should be told of the risks and that “During pregnancy, women experience immunologic and physiologic changes that could increase their risk for more severe illness from respiratory infections”
If you are pregnant and considering travelling overseas for any length of time please use good hand hygiene and consider keeping your distance from people.
